Orbit is a free, open source
program, by Aaron Golden, which simulates and displays the motion
of bodies in space according to Newton's Laws.
There are currently two versions
of the program. Orbit v1.3.4 is a two dimensional simulator which
runs under Mac OS 7.5 or higher (under Classic on machines with OS
X). Orbit3d v1.0 is a three dimensional simulation written with
Cocoa and OpenGL for OS X.
Users can design their own solar
systems to simulate with either Orbit v1.3.4 or Orbit3d v1.0.
Orbit3d v1.0 includes solar system editing tools whereas Orbit
v1.3.4 does not. (To edit systems for Orbit v1.3.4 the user must
use a text editor and a simple scripting language.)
Both programs are fully
documented. Orbit3d can be used to run and edit solar system files
from Orbit v1.3.4 but Orbit v1.3.4 may not be able to interpret
all Orbit3d files.
The latest versions of both
programs are available for download:
